William Joseph Simmons was born in Harpersville (Ala.) in 1880. After serving in the Spanish-American War, he became a Methodist circuit preacher in Alabama and Florida. He served in that capacity until 1912 when he was suspended at the Methodist Bishop Conference. Simmons then became active in numerous fraternal organizations, primarily the Woodmen of the World in Birmingham (Ala.). The Ku Klux Klan was formally incorporated under the laws of the state of Georgia on Dec. 4, 1915.
